Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Pet

In honor of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Genetipetz is celebrating those real-life animals that inspire our mixed up creations. Whether you’ve owned pets your entire life or you’re considering adopting for the first time, nothing will bring you greater joy than loving and being loved by an animal. Here we’ve listed the top five reasons you should adopt a pet!

1. You’ll save a life. At any given moment, there are 7.6 million cats and dogs waiting to be adopted in the United States, and 2.7 of them are still being euthanized each year due to lack of shelter space and funding.

2. You’ll save money. Many people get hung up on purchasing a particular breed or a purebred dog and go through a breeder when looking for a pet. Purebred dogs can cost anywhere from $500 to $3,000, depending on size, breed and availability. However, adopting from a local shelter can range in price from FREE to around $100. Shelter dogs also typically come spayed or neutered and with (at least) their first round of shots. Many people think they have better personalities, too!

3. Pets are good for your health. Research shows that living with pets is good for your health! People with pets have been shown to have lower blood pressure, less anxiety and improved immunity (especially against allergens). Caring for a pet has also been suggested as a way to soothe Alzheimer patients, and owning a pet can lower your chances of heart disease, heart attack and depression.

4. Pets teach responsibility. If you have kids, pets are a great way to teach responsibility. Charge your kid(s) with feeding, bathing and walking your dog as part of their daily or weekly chore list. Not only will they learn to care for another living thing, they will have fun doing it!

5. You’ll receive unconditional love. Pets love in a way that many humans find difficult. It doesn’t matter if you had a bad day, ignored them or forgot to take them for a walk—they will always be happy to see you! With pets, you always get out more than you put in.
