While as many as 47 percent of American households own a dog as a pet, dogs are not for everybody. Research shows that owning a pet promotes a healthier lifestyle, helps alleviate stress, fosters psychological and social benefits and increases happiness. 1. Iguanas. One of the most popular pet shop purchases, iguanas make great companions. They can live for up to 20 years and should be housed in aquarium. These reptiles are naturally aggressive, so you should be gentle and use caution when handling them. Their diet consists of leafy greens, and they need to be kept at a temperature above 85 degrees.
2. Donkeys. According to The American Pet Products Association, more than 3 million people in the United States own equine animals, including horses, donkeys and miniature donkeys. With the proper training, these animals are great with kids, which is a bonus for many families. Typically about three feet tall and around 200 pounds, miniature donkeys eat hay and grain and require fresh water and space to roam.
3. Potbellied pigs. Potbellied pigs make an adorable addition to your family. Not only are they cute, but you can train them to walk on leashes, and they are smart and affectionate. They can get to be up to 100 pounds while still being the size of a 40-pound dog.
4. Snakes. Snakes are relatively easy to care for, and they make for great conversation starters. Some of the top species to keeping at home include corn snakes, California kingsnakes, rosy boas, gopher snakes and ball pythons.
